What Causes Fatigue?

Ah, fatigue, that feeling that you just don’t have the energy to do the things you need to do. We all know that feeling. It’s different than feeling tired, it’s like a whole body and mind feeling that has you dragging through the day. You might be wondering what causes fatigue, and what you can do about it.

What Causes Fatigue?

Lifestyle issues are usually to blame—specifically, eating habits, and work habits.

Fatigue can be caused or made worse by irregular eating, eating too much cold or greasy food, dairy, or eating some kind of food that your body does not agree with. Another common cause of fatigue is depletion from illness or overwork. I see this with people who have pushed themselves to work or study beyond what their body can really support. It’s not always good to push boundaries, sometimes we pay the price.

Types of Fatigue

In my acupuncture clinic, I tend to see and treat two different types:

  1. sluggish fatigue like you are in a fog and your every move is weighed down by a ton of bricks. You may have a hard time getting up in the morning, getting motivated, and thinking or acting clearly. Sleep doesn’t help —sleep might even make that heavy feeling worse, even though you can barely haul yourself out of bed. You know that exercise might help burn off the fog, but you just can’t get yourself to the gym.
  2. Then, there’s a different kind of fatigue that feels like your tank is just empty. With this type of fatigue, you’re not exactly tired—you may even have trouble settling down and sleeping. Daily activity feels like it’s going to drain your last drop of energy. You may also have back pain and/or a feeling of being overwhelmed. And you know exercise won’t help, but will instead just make you feel worse.

The good news is this: no matter what causes your fatigue, acupuncture will help. I will assess the type of fatigue you have during your first appointment and get you on track to recover your energy.

Start Feeling Better

If you are feeling tired, even exhausted, take heart—help is on the way. Acupuncture is a holistic solution to get you feeling better.

I would suggest starting with a series of five acupuncture treatments, to give you a good start on the road to health. Over the course of these five treatments, we will restore your body’s natural energy. You will feel more peppy, and you will protect yourself from getting knocked down again, because your body is in a more healthy state. I then recommend monthly or seasonal maintenance, like an oil change, to keep you in top shape.

I have had patients who were falling behind in their responsibilities before they came to see me, and through acupuncture, we were able to restore a normal amount of energy so they could be a better student, parent, partner or boss. The paper was now easier to write and they were more inspired. The laundry was getting done and they were cooking healthy food again. They were able to get back to the exercise routine that brings them so much satisfaction.
